Privacy Policy

Taiyo Shobo (hereafter, "the Company") recognises that the handling of personal information is not a mere technicality but a matter that touches directly upon the dignity and security of individuals. In connection with the crowdfunding services we provide, we therefore treat personal information in accordance with the policy set out below, and we endeavour to do so in a manner that is both intelligible and fair.

1. Information we may obtain

In the course of operating Taiyo Shobo Cloud, the Company may obtain the following categories of information:

  • Names (including author names and supporter names)
  • Email addresses
  • Postal addresses, postcodes, and telephone numbers (for the dispatch of returns and related matters)
  • Records of support, such as which projects were supported and in what amounts

We do not seek information for its own sake. Each item is collected only where it has a clear and practical connection with the purposes described below.

2. Purposes of use

The personal information obtained by the Company is used for the following purposes:

  • To communicate with supporters and authors regarding project support and its status
  • To prepare, ship, and otherwise provide returns (such as books and related items)
  • To respond to inquiries and to maintain records of such correspondence

We do not employ personal information for purposes that are unrelated to these aims, nor do we treat vagueness of purpose as a licence for expansion. Where a new purpose arises, we shall consider it explicitly and, where appropriate, seek consent.

3. Provision of personal information to third parties

As a general rule, the Company does not provide personal information to third parties. Exceptions are made only in the following clearly defined circumstances:

  • Where the individual concerned has given explicit consent
  • Where provision is required by law or by a legally binding request from a public authority
  • Where information is provided to delivery or logistics companies for the purpose of shipping returns

Even in these cases, we limit the information disclosed to what is strictly necessary. The fact that information can be shared does not, in our view, imply that it ought to be.

4. Security measures

The Company takes reasonable and appropriate measures to prevent unauthorised access to personal information, as well as its loss, destruction, falsification, or leakage. These measures include technical safeguards, organisational rules, and, not least, the cultivation of a certain intellectual discipline among those who handle such data.

Absolute security is not a promise that any prudent person would make; however, the refusal to take precautions would be an abdication of responsibility. We therefore commit to continuous review and improvement of our safeguards.

5. Access, correction, and deletion

Upon receiving a request from an individual regarding their own personal information, the Company will, after confirming identity, respond in one or more of the following ways:

  • Disclosure of the personal information we hold concerning that individual
  • Correction or updating of such information where it is inaccurate or incomplete
  • Deletion of such information where continued retention is no longer necessary or appropriate

In some cases, legal or operational requirements may oblige us to retain certain records for a period. Even then, we aim to explain the situation in terms that a reasonable person can understand, rather than hiding behind obscurity.

We do not regard inquiries as an inconvenience but as an opportunity to clarify our own practices. A policy that cannot be explained in plain language is, in our view, in need of revision.

7. Revisions to this policy

This Privacy Policy may be revised from time to time as laws, technology, and our own services evolve. When a revision is made, the updated policy will be posted on this page, and the date of the most recent revision will be indicated.

Changes are not made lightly. Where a revision materially affects the way in which personal information is handled, we shall endeavour to make the substance of the change as clear as possible, so that individuals may judge for themselves whether they find it acceptable.
